| This Part had great elements - visit of the wicked stepmother being one. But the thing most lacking at the start of the chapter was (in my opinion) a description of the protagonist’s emotions. Did he dislike/hate/loathe her in chapter one only now the school has completely turned his attitude around? In my opinion this is a missing or underutilized essential story element because the story is certainly a rite of passage physically and should also be one emotionally (to some extent). Reaction to the father being a maid was excellent. But from soap in the mouth to the new house rules is a void. This is the place for substantial reaction, even fear. After all, the wicked stepmother is laying down the law. And I thought she should have hit him with a threat to force her will. Why would the threat of soap in the mouth keep him in line now after all she has done to him? Excellent job on his feelings about having to make the selection! |

| Edward Pickman Derby’s Tale Details |
| Ah, always a pleasure to find a new LanaB story. While in form and substance this story pretty much follows the pattern of most of your earlier stories, I did notice some subtle changes. The Indonesian scenes in the first half were exciting and I liked the fact that the 'natives' weren't angry amazons. I also liked the guide, Miki, very much. Actually, he seemed to be the most human character around - he was smart enough to get the hint not to have sex, but he realizes that he may not be in any better shape than Brian after all is said and done. I do notice that in most of your stories, when women are turned into men they generally become the most horrible, overbearing males possible. Rachael wasn't quite that bad (she never threatened Brian physically)but she did lie to him and was determined to have her way in the situation. Was it fair for Brian to have to eat his words? Sure. But I would have liked it better if Brian had found out about Rachael's duplicity, issued an ultimatum and the two of them gone on through life as equal partners. You don't see a lot of that at FM! |
