| I have been going back and re-reading Julie's stories as I eagerly await the next offering from her. Ambition was the first I ever read, and though I have gone on to read everything she has written and love all her wonderful chatacters, Hallie will always be my first love and there's always something special about that. The characters are vibrant and real and engender a genuine sense of caring in the reader. The narrative is incredibly descriptive and draws you into the story and makes you feel a part of it. If this is your first experience with Julie's writing I encourage you to read her other works. Ambition and its sequel Purpose are not the exceptions, they are the rule. I fervently hope to see more of Hallie someday. She will always have a special place in my heart. Scott |

| I began to cringe at first when I read the hyper-masculine dialogue. As I read further I realized the dialogue was appropriate to the story. There is a solid reason why the characters talk this way. The duality of his feelings at the end was perfect. We learn through his own expeience with his family what the other prisoners are dealing with. By seeing his experience, we get insight into why the other prisoners act the way they do. Perfectly executed. If you do write a sequel, please don't rely on the traditional humiliation/indoctrination plot. Your story is so much stronger than that. |

| Sloppy language in dialogue is okay -- some characters just talk that way -- but you're letting it slop over into the nearby text a bit. Be careful. There are a few malapropisms and other blunders, and the tone of the whole story is a little too self-consciously jocular -- and that quickly becomes more annoying than funny -- but you've duplicated much of the feel of a Morpheus story. The writing isn't too bad, either. You need a little self-restraint: don't try so hard to be funny! It's exceedingly hard to make a long-obsolete stock phrase like "demon rum" work for a genuinely comic effect. I consider myself a good writer, and I don't think I could do it: it would just sound lame no matter what I tried. |
