| This is not really a review in any formal sense; I would categorize it as an appreciation. This is a very high quality story with many areas of excellence. It bothers me not at all that it shares certain elements with a previous story. In fact I enjoy reworkings of traditional plot lines. What this does of course is to enable the reader to compare how the author handles the plot complications in comparison with other authors. I thought the set up was truly excellent. Melissa's appearance and her initial reticence/coyness are intriguing. Then the protagonoist has to search his mind and available resources to no avail. This is a marvelous set up. The initial makeover scene was super. It was detailed and still entertaining. The premise that "Susan" is a logical emotional/psychological result of the evening demands a willing suspension of disbelief. I was very willing let me assure you. This story puts me in mind of a multi course dinner. The entree didn't come up to the standard set by the appetizers. What do I mean. With the exception of the discussion with Charles; it was a sketch rather than a narrative. I wanted more understanding of the emerging "Susan" prior to her fateful dinner party. I thought that you were perhaps rushing to a conclusion. While I accept a willing suspension of disbelief as a necessary part of TG fiction, I find the "love at first words" with Charles is not founded in the established characterization of Susan. Let me explicate, since even Melissa believes that telling Susan that she is to be the date of a man for dinner would result in her declining the invitation; Susan's actions are not in keeping with what we know about her character. Think of the typical romantic comedy when a couple meets in a blind date; this is the begining of the courtship not the end. You speak to that with Susan's internal musings about leading Charles on a merry chase. Where we see the "love struck" protagonists, the lovers are generally star crossed. The courtship itself is fraught with difficulties. There are opposing forces. In the other situation the courtship dance it self is difficult. In Melissa's case, she had to be convinced over a long period of time that sincerity was involved. Then she makes demands; I cannot do this until... In summation, I consider this to be certainly in the top 5% of all TG fiction I have read. You write well and have an excellent feel for setting up a dramatic situation. You seemed to change from narrative to synopsis at a point. This I believe led you to a hasty conclusion not sufficiently based on your developed characters. This still is a very excellent story. |
