| Ingenious and well done. The instruction manual is pure tech writer prose. Time is a bit too compressed here -- come on, this whole thing takes from Friday evening to Sunday morning -- but not much else is wrong. But shouldn't this be classified as Sci Fi, and isn't a Body Suit at the center of things? |

| This is a well-plotted story with obvious long-reaching consequences. Technical flaws are almost nonexistant. As I read it on the list, I was often very curious as to what happens next. But... I also found the story somewhat hollow. The villains' motivations are weak, for example. Something Mr. Hart seems to forget here is that the Old Man tends to be the least interesting character in a SRU story - putting him at the center of the story results in a very passive protagonist, with more interesting characters existing on the periphery, passing in and out well before they've been examined well. The characters also tend to take a lot in stride - none of the horrors (at least, things which came across as horrors to me) in this story ever seem to affect anyone on a personal level. This is fairly common both for TG fantasy in general and Bill Hart's stories specifically, but there's more of it here, I think, enough to really be noticeable. Not that this isn't a pretty decent story (I tend to notice flaws better than the exceptional). It's actually quite entertaining, in a very plot-centric kind of way. |
