A Typical Woman -- so, typical women are like Annette, Rachel and Clare? They made a fool of George, took over his life, ridiculed him in public, and now he's lost any real hope with a future. Will Annette start charging Geor ... em, Georgina rent? Will Rachel start being called Daddy? Will George get S.R.S.? How will this end if you do not finish this tragedy called "marriage," with Georgina getting a divorce, separation or walking out. As I see it, "his" best choice lies in getting away from these "typical women," get his balls back, and move on in a direction away from them, his "parents," and all the others in his sordid life. There is, as you have written it, no other obvious solution - Annette was a big part of his humiliation, and I cannot see why he, if he has any sense, would stay where he's not really welcome.

It seems to me that Moose struck you because: (a) You challenged him as being wrong about something he considered his turf. He'd invested a lot of time and emotion into figuring out what was going on with his roommate. That makes it his turf. You were flat out contradicting him and doing it with such self assurance that to him you seemed arrogant and dictatorial; confrontational. Testosterone enters the picture. (b) There were other aspects to your relationship with Moose that played into this. I don't know what they were, but dollars to doughnuts they had something to do with him wanting to hit you someday, and that was the day. You two had a friendship for some time, it wasn't just a void, so we know there were other factors in your friendship than just you both were people who knew the poor kid who killed himself. It's rare for someone to strike a friend, and with such intense emotion to it, unless there are various reasons leading up to it. (c) As already said, he didn't like you "cheapening" Gabe's life by making it just one of many lives of the same kind. (d) And he didn't like you making yourself out to be closer to Gabe than Moose was. Which goes back to (a) somewhat. And I am just guessing also goes to (b)? The way the facts you relate fit together for me is that the hurtful girlfriend _wanted_ to catch Gabe alone in a compromising moment. (What was she doing bursting in at all, much less when she knew Moose was gone for the weekend?) And probably said some incredibly cutting and hurtful things to Gabe. I would like to see the videotape replay of what she and he said to each other when she burst in. She probably told him to kill himself and really meant it. I don't know if she wanted Gabe discredited in Moose's eyes, everyone's eyes or what. Maybe she was jealous of Moose's affection for him. Maybe she's insecure and threatened by crossdressers in general. It isn't only males in our society who have a strong compulsion to hurt crossdressers. The motives are complex and varied, but seem to always be founded upon insecurity and hatred of Other and mob psychology at its worst. The same sort of thinking, at core, that leads a sensitive and smart Saudi from a good family, living in Germany, to devote his entire existence to killing thousands of random American civilians because this will hurt the people who are hurting his people. Although on the surface, you'd hardly think that his people are the Palestinians or that the American civilian victims have anything to do with Israel. In other words, the girlfriend perpetrated a hate crime on Gabe, then on Moose for taking Gabe's side (or showing a "weak side" to her), and Gabe perpetrated a hate crime on you when he hit you. As for Tim O'Brien being an expert on telling a story that is more "true" than others tell...I used to read his novels and quickly realized that he has an internal struggle over telling _himself_ the truth about something (but what?) that he will probably never deal with. And that he wasn't seeing all the truth in front of him that he needed to see if he was going to tell us about that truth in his writing. One of the primary requisites of telling a true story well is being a penetrating and comprehensive observer. Whether one is telling a fictional story that is also "true" or a factual true story. Of the writers who began publishing Viet Nam stories contemporarily with O'Brien, I would be much, much more interested in what Michael Herr has to say on the same subject. Or James Webb. I'm sorry for being so long without actually reviewing the posted story. Here we go, now. :-) First, I think this was an essay, not a story. Second, I really like the aim of the essay and think it supported its theses pretty well. Third, I think there's room for breaking each separate thesis in the story into a separate essay of its own. Perhaps trying to knit them all back together again into the greater idea or ideas that they support would be useful and fun, after first writing each of the separate essays. In short, thank you for sharing with us what you wrote. I liked it, enjoyed it even though it was in part painful, and think our lives are improved by reading it. I'd like to see more work based on the same idea seeds you started with. :-) Annie

Couple more: "Jacqueline Chan Adventures"-- Our fave Hong-Kong wacko undergoes a whole new kind of "stunt"... "Whose Clothes Are They Anyway?"-- Drew Carey hosts the British import where instead of unscripted comedy, she serves up unpredictable changes... "The Weakest Link"-- No complaints here, though one would hope Anne Robinson would tire of *literally* kicking losers in the weakest link... "Dilbert"-- A very special episode, where Antina, the Non-Stereotypical Woman, goes on a (sadly, stereotypical) rampage and makes everyone else into stereotypes... (Notice I didn't say two-dimensional stereotypes) And while we're at it, there's a few video games I'd like to see changed around... "Metal Gear Solid"-- After the plot twist on Disc 2, Snake decides her code-name has *got* to change... "Grand Theft Libido"-- Sex-crime detectives, getting no justice on the force, decide to become vigilantes in the streets of Liberation City... "The Legend of Zelda: Link Isn't The Hero"-- Do I really need to explain this one? "Super Mario Sisters"-- Or this one, for that matter? All in all, a good concept. Keep it up.

Hello, I’m sorry for not using the correct way of expressing myself perhaps, but English is not my native language. And, of course, it’s only my opinion, others may think different. From the author's eye, the story is mostly fine and consistent within itself. The reader is really hating the bad guy and every moment, he is doing some new violence to Mandy and John/Jean the reader would gladly kill him. Especially because his violence is not so much physical but psycological or mental. From the reader’s view it is not that easy, and for me it is a totally desperate and dark story. John doesn’t deserve that development. He didn’t cheat on his wife, he didn’t want to be dominated, nothing of that common stuff in other stories, so that you can say he behaves as a sorcerer’s apprentice who can’t stop what he has started, and so he deserves what he gets. It's not that way! John/Jean never really has a chance to get out of the changes by himself or the help of his wife. He seems so much innocent in all this, that the story should have ended, when she finds out what she finally has become, but that she could stand it. Even that she could stand, that the child is from that criminal, but that with her wife’s love, Jean and Mandy could have somewhat of a future together. I think that is it what almost all readers were hoping. In addition to that I’m asking myself, if a writer (not a pro, but a person like most of us, enjoying at least reading these stories when not writing them) could build such a sad story. In my opinion it can only be done because the author has gone through bad experiences in life all for herself, and that she is getting her own back on someone for that. Of course, I don’t know, if that is the case, but when it does, I offer my sympathy to her, even though she has really affected my strong feelings of good and evil with this story. Because of that, I didn’t get excited or aroused, which normally is some r%ason for writing and reading these stories too, but I was only feeling sad about Mandy and even stronger for John/Jean. All in all, after reading this story, I’m feeling somewhat brainwashed for myself. From a depressed and anxious Daniela
