| An interesting twist on the concept of "paying for one's sins". In general, this story follows the concept of storytelling by having the classic arc of a beginning, a middle, and an end, or denouement. However, the beginning, where the character is caught and has the curse placed upon him, is very compressed and elaborated very quickly. The middle, where the character does her pennance, is more straightforward. It is the end, where the characters of the story seem to come to life. Here, Madame Zelda emerges as a more complex character than has been portrayed in past stories. The character has experienced growth and knowledge has been imparted--but now the character can grow in a more complex manner by having the ability to experience knowledge "from both sides now." Not a bad story by any means, but the real heart emerges towards the end, where it becomes much more interesting. It might have been better to elaborate a bit more on the characters developing feelings about womanhood more in the middle--it seems somewhat rushed in the end. I would say this is a "workmanlike" TG story--a sturdy retelling of the classic magical TG transformation tale. I look forward to other Madame Zelda tales in the future from this author. |

| So far, so good. Try using "said" more. Writing "he snapped back" or "she teased" or whatever is a mark of the hack writer. So is elegant variation (saying the same thing differently to avoid repeating oneself, when repeating oneself would be less annoying). So is slipping little needless bits of description (e.g., we know that the guy is now wearing "the luscious young African-American girl's body," and don't need to be reminded again and again. Well, if you're trying to give the reader a hard-on, I suppose it's okay, but don't overdo it). All in all it's a good yarn, but these little things grate. |
