| I try not to respond to every review since I want to listen more than talk, but Fakeminsk hit on something I'd really like to acknowledge. The Fifi stories have absolutely evolved! Partially that's because I like to be a little experimental in my writing style. When I wrote the first one I thought it would be a one-off, so a goofy and relentlessly jokey sitcom format was a fun experiment. For the sequel ("My Beautiful Laundrette"), I went for something more layered, a bit more character-driven with various plot threads that weaved together into a big crazy ending. With this story, I tried to lean in even more on the characters and raised the stakes a little. To use a comic book metaphor, if the first story was like a fun and light Silver Age comic, then this story was more like an Alex Ross painting with a more "realistic" portrayal of fundamentally unrealistic characters and situations. It's still very much a comedy, just (hopefully!) with bigger emotional resonance. I'm still fussing for the right balance--and the inspiration of A Christmas Carol made this installment particularly weighty emotionally--but I hope people have been enjoying seeing things grow and change a little! |
