Altogether, an interesting concept and a compelling, readable story, especially for one that's so long. The sudden transition offers a nice way to reflect on many happy aspects of gender transition without focusing on the mechanics and difficulties that we face. As in my own transition, intolerance and ignorance show up, but are also fairly remote to life in a (reasonably) well-educated area society. Julie O might take stock of the fact that her stories--which I uniformly enjoy--are comedies (in the classical sense). Difficulties and tensions exist, but never threaten the felicitous trajectory of the story. Some might say this creates a wish-fulfillment lightness that's uninteresting to those who have the courage (luck, self-knowledge, support, ...) to transition, but I disagree. I also enjoy romantic comedies even when I'm not lonely. However, there are times when the writing (particularly with Debbie & Michelle) strays toward a kind of seriousness that the comedy genre doesn't really support. A little more struggle & misfortune for the main characters would probably be necessary to give the weight this subplot warrants. Here is where some thought about dramatic theory and genre might help focus the writing. There's nothing wrong with mixing comedy and tragedy, but you can't just mix and match. This deliberate choice of tone would also have helped to pare down the story, which didn't need to be as long as it was. I don't imagine myself a mistress of literature and all this criticism is minor when held up against the mostly enjoyable, interesting and happy story that Julie O's written. Not all will love it, and it may appeal more to pre-transition TS and cross-dressing readers than to transitioning and post-transition TS readers, but I think most readers will find it enjoyable. [If you're reading FM and you don't think any of those four categories fits you, you're likely a pre-transition TS: I hope you realize this soon.] I hope the prolific Julie has many more compelling stories in her! :-)
