Random Reviews

This review discusses certain elements of the story in a way that some may consider it a "spoiler." If you haven't read Texas Gal yet, and plan to do so, then you should skip over my comments. ======= There were a lot of things about this story that I liked. I thought the character development was excellent. The author has drawn a lot of players -- almost all of them female -- in this little saga, and yet, for me at least, they all emerged as unique individuals. That's nice. I was also glad to see that the the author had given some consideration to the plot, although so far it seems pretty predictable. The ominous buildup to the end of Part One, I thought was fairly skillful. Having said all that, I have to say that there were also some things I *really* didn't care for. The "men-are-stupid-insensitive-and-mean" theme was hit much too hard, IMO. I really can't visualize a pediatrician telling her 11-year-old genetic male patient that testosterone was a substnace that made young males do foolish things. If there was supposed to be an anti-feminist theme to this piece, it was so heavy, that I suspect it may have the opposite effect on modern readers who are not already committed to the reactionary "Fascinating Womanhood" lifestyle. "Mommy" (who we're supposed to believe is an intelligent and caring mother) unabashedly steers her female children toward a life of servitude to some future "Mr. Right." She teaches them that their value rest in their physical beauty, their ability to catch a man, and how efficiently they can do the dishes and make the beds. She's obviously raising them to be Stepford Wives. And yet, the only other sympathetically drawn adult woman is Anita Clark, who isn't a housewife at all, but an MD. Might we suppose that Dr. Clark is raising *her* twin girls to view their world in the same limited way as Darla Anne and her sisters? I guesss when I read the last line of Part One, my first thoughts (evil feminist that I am) were, "Good!" and "I hope she *is!" in that order. Finally, Darla Anne was *much* too good to be true. In ten years, she never makes the inductive leap from being rejected by the boys and accepted by the girls to perhaps wishing for something more, and never tries on "Mother's panties" even once. And yet, in the space of 24 hours, she turns into Jon-Benet Ramsey, a child beauty queen so convincing that not even a doctor (fortunate combination of pediatrician and OB/Gyn) can pick up a single hint. I think this writer has a lot of ability, but needs to keep a tighter rein on his/her tendencies to romanticize all things perceived as "female". Not only are imperfect females more realistic, they're a lot more interesting. I look forward to seeing more by C. Sprite in the future.

Nice story, but a little too short for my tastes. A sequel dealing with Jerry's changes would be great.

Again! What a wonderful story! Even heart wrenching in places! I think you are one of the better writers. Certainly up there with the Professor (another fave of mine). Keep up the good work and may you never find writers block in your road to becoming a truely talented writer. hugs, danielle.

Wow. I've read my share of tg/tv tales, but this one takes the cake for being the most coherent and enjoyable.Intelligently written, REAL characters, no glaring typos or crudeness. If its any indication of how much I enjoyed this story, I've read nearly everything here on Mania, Nifty, and the TSA, and have never had the desire to comment on any story until now. I'll be looking out for more of Mr. Willows stories. Bravo.
