Duty of a soldier 2     Details
Bettig's story surprised me. From the very beginning, description, mood, and character were placed in the forefront. I've read quite a few stories here and elsewhere, and this was the first that drew me in. I will refrain from spoilers, because someone may read this before they read the story, but I will say that this work does have negative aspects, it is at times inconsistent with the richness of description in the earlier part, and as the story progresses, it seems rushed. Yet, it was on the whole, a flowing work that actually drew the reader onward, almost never succumbing to adolescence and the usual cliches that many of the other submissions use with relish. Many of the users of this place go for the quick payoff, not even finishing stories once we got what we came for. This story, despite its shortcomings which decrease its value as a truly good story outside of the bounds of genres (and into the realm of something so hyperbolic as literature) it is a good read, especially the beginning descriptions and the conflicts throughout, and I encourage the author to contribute more in the future, as he has definitely raised the bar for TG fiction. I came for a payoff of one sort, and was treated to a wholly different kind. There were errors in grammar, there was a lack of the minute detail as the story marched on, and the climax could have been written with more gusto, more of a challenge to the narrator, and detail about the opposing religion itself (where it moves away from the narrator's own Christianity). These things are, of course, minor. The fact that there are criticisms, though, illustrate that there is something good to begin with, and that it can be improved through revision. I'm not saying that all TG stories should follow suit. Undoubtedly it might lose its popularity if everyone wrote this way, for the simple reason of the "payoff" I mentioned, but perhaps some writers can learn a bit from this writer, perhaps use a bit more characterization, more description, more detail than before to liven up their stories and make them more unique. I believe it would only enhance the "payoff type of stories. As for those less intent on the payoff story, it is encouraging to see a relatively mature work like this, and I (and I'm sure many others) would readily read other works of this focus and caliber. Both types of stories have their place here. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to do so, and perhaps write a bit about it in this section. -A.B.

First rate story - with some nice twists and turns and Paul's usual excellent characterizations. The bittering betweeent he kids seems real as does the motivations of the characters involved - an excllent read both funny and dramatic.
