| I found this story to be a very intriguing take on the future of robotics, and how Asimov's laws come into it. The 'bots' in this story seem like downgraded versions of Data from Star Trek TNG - I'm also reminded of the Exocomps from another TNG episode. These bots are programmed to serve - but, away from humans, they can talk amongst themselves. Granted, the conversations aren't very spirited, but the discussion about dreams near the end of the story is interesting. Then, of course, the subplot of the corporation that's killing off their employees and using their minds to power the bots. How is this going to play out? I'd presume that the bots will eventually find out the truth, what with the main character finding a loophole in her programming and everything. However, the story is bogged down somewhat in 'technobabble'. These bots are devices, nothing more, and while it's necessary for an engineering class to know how they function, going through every detail - however nonessential - is a quick way to bore casual readers. Altogether, I liked this story, and am eagerly awaiting Part 2. |
