| Paula's story is more of a fantasy vignette than a real tightly plotted story and that is its strength and its weakness at the same time. It is a short, sometimes engaging, if slightly silly read. If the reader can share some of Paula's fantasies this will probably be an appealing story. If not, well it still might be an interesting read, Paula knows how to use active verbs and crisp images to move the story along. There are very few passages that are dulled by the passive voice or a lack of some sort of intriguing imagery, usually tied into some sort of common TG fantasy or FM cliche gently tweaked. Paula manipulates many of the standard cliches of TG fiction in a whimsical way at times with some ourtrageously lucky coincidences that would make Edgar Rice Burroughs blush. How did that surgical glue get there? :) Paula's chief weakness as a writer, one shared by some professionals, is an inablility to be certain of the spelling of a word or to detect when her spellchecker is suggesting the wrong word to correct a misspelling. For instance, at the beginning of the story there is a "to" in a sentence that should obviously be "do" as any other change would likely convert the sentence to the much weaker passive voice. There are perhaps a dozen or so misspellings and a few grammar mistakes marring the story but Paula's fans are probably used to a few foibles like this. :) If you like Paula's stories and/or style of story vignettes, and especially if you also share some of Paula's little fantasies, you will probably enjoy this slight tale. If you get anal about spelling errors, maybe you shouldn't read Paula's work as it is likely to make you itch in uncomfortable places. :) Authors in a free medium like the newsgroups or FM live for the reviews they get. Any review is usually better than no review but remember, the author wrote this story for your enjoyment and her own and has offered it here on FM for free. Ms. B. Haven |
