| In the hopes of sparing all a flame war, as someone who has written their fair share of criticized fiction, might I suggest some things that are obvious. First, Ms. S's comment advised that the conduct portrayed is child abuse. We can argue about that in the context of the genre and this website. I thionk that judgment is not right. The criticism was very strong and not warranted. That it drew a strong response should have been expected and good for CL to defend his/her work. Frankly, it contains nothing more offensive than what appears in the old Flowers in the Attic series. AS I recall them, they contained much cruelty to children and incest. You could buy them at the mall when they come out. Still can. Second, I confess that I set off a flame war once when I took offense to a much milder comment. Someone suggested that a mind control story I wrote violated their squick factor. It was supposed to do that. Nothing came from the sea of flung barbs so can we not take that path? Here's the bottom line. It's a great initial concept and, as far as I know, unique here. It borrows, of course. A sort of forced prince and pauper, a couple of Shakespeare comedies, a few bad movies - all sort of roled together and extended by first rate work. If it's not your cup of tea, like they say - If you can't say anything nice, it's better to say nothing at all. So when's the next post? |
