| humm, perhaps I've grown too used to reading non-English writers translations. I really have stopped paying attention to poor English, so I failed to see what everyone is complaining about. My only disagreement with the whole story on the "realism aspect" would be that when they returned to give her the chance to leave, they should have fixed her body to reproduce normally. Leaving her like that would only serve to compound the problem. I mean 53 children in 12 years... plus she had at about another 30 years of fertility ahead of her. In the end she would have produced in the neighborhood of about 200 kids overall (they say over 100 at the end of the story, but at the going rate it would have been twice that, btw that's being conservative)- you do the Math. As far as the technicalities of "would this be cost effective?" well you must think about the society that possesses the interstellar capabilities. Do they possess Zero point energy? How badly is the death sentence looked upon by society? If it's considered absolutely taboo, then use of a neurological transference device to transfer a criminal's mind into a genetically modified clone, probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch. It would be MORE costly to keep the criminal incarcerated even a few years. There's clothing costs, feeding, electrical, hygiene, water, staffing... a whole slew of expenses. Instead of killing the criminal, they mind wipe him, take away the body that possessed him to rape in the first place making him female, and reintroduce "her" into a male dominated society that would force her to be a "productive" member of society. Of course all this is dependent on if the society DOES possess zero point energy, and the author at no time claimed any other fuel source. Really that's just splitting hairs though, frankly who cares? It's Fiction people! Read enjoy and stop trying to bring Reality into Fantasy. |
