| "Can I help yu sur," Jason, Jason, Jason. This sort of illiterate dialect (how does 'yu' sound different from 'you' anyway?) is never done by 21st Century writers. It seems transparently calculated to draw attention to an apparent dialect, and by making it seem ignorant, to lower the status of the speaker. When the best period writers of the past used dialect (Twain, and even Harris), it was carefully crafted to help the reader "hear" the way a real speaker actually sounded -- not simply to involve the reader in a racial stereotype. The practical effect of these repeated faux pas was to pull me completely out of the story. Sorry. .......Tamara Rand. |
